“The Wow! Signal” is the landmark tenth studio album by British stadium-rock giants Muse, released on June 26, 2026, via Warner Records.
The album was produced by Muse, Dan Lancaster, and Aleks Von Korff.
Its title references the famous “Wow! Signal,” the mysterious radio signal detected in 1977 that remains one of the most intriguing events in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. Following the politically charged and confrontational “Will of the People” (2022), Muse return here to the realm of cosmic philosophy, science fiction, and grand conceptual storytelling, united by a central question: “Can humanity really be alone in the universe?”
Critics have widely described “The Wow! Signal” as the band’s most convincing and cohesive return to the celebrated sound of the “Black Holes and Revelations” era since the mid-2000s. The album blends several key influences:
- Space Rock / Progressive Rock — expansive conceptual compositions, cosmic atmospheres, intricate arrangements, and explosive dynamics.
- Alternative Rock / Symphonic Rock — towering walls of guitar and bass intertwined with sweeping orchestral arrangements and lush string sections.
- Space Pop / Synth-Rock — pulsating 1980s-inspired rhythms, melodic hooks, and a rich palette of analog synthesizers.
Although the album revolves around the vastness of the cosmos, frontman Matt Bellamy revealed that it is also one of Muse’s most intimate and emotionally vulnerable works in years. Reflections on humanity’s place in the universe are woven together with personal struggles, crises, and experiences from Bellamy’s private life.
The record also marks a significant milestone in the band’s creative process. For the first time, Dan Lancaster—known to fans as Muse’s touring keyboardist and multi-instrumentalist, as well as for his production work with Bring Me The Horizon and Blink-182—served as a full co-writer and producer on much of the album. His involvement helped the band strike a balance between raw rock energy and modern electronic production techniques. Several tracks also benefited from contributions by acclaimed producer BloodPop.
For the first time in many years, Muse invited a major guest vocalist to appear on a studio album. The ninth track, the dramatic and anthemic “Hush,” features British pop star Ellie Goulding, whose ethereal vocals create a striking contrast with Bellamy’s powerful performance and the song’s cinematic scale.
Many reviewers singled out the opening five-minute epic “The Dark Forest” as the album’s defining achievement. The track functions as a miniature rock opera, incorporating complex vocal arrangements, a large choir, thunderous percussion, and Bellamy’s trademark falsetto. Critics particularly praised how the atmosphere of endless cosmic darkness provided the perfect backdrop for the trio’s instrumental confidence and ambition.
In a deliberate departure from modern studio conventions, much of the album’s rhythm section was recorded live at Abbey Road Studios, with Dominic Howard and Chris Wolstenholme performing together without a click track. The band consciously sought to move away from the artificial perfection and mathematical precision of contemporary recordings in favor of a more organic, human feel.
