“Hell Is A State Of Mind” is the sixth studio album by Finnish metal band Lost Society, released on March 6, 2026, via the renowned label Nuclear Blast.
Arriving four years after If The Sky Came Down (2022), the album captures the band’s definitive and uncompromising transformation. While Lost Society originally emerged as a fast-paced thrash metal act, this release stands as their most ambitious and experimental work within the realm of modern heavy rock.
The album’s major musical surprise is the involvement of the Babelsberg Film Orchestra, a 40-piece German cinematic orchestra. This collaboration gives the record an epic, theatrical, and highly cinematic character, at times evoking comparisons to the dramatic scope of Avenged Sevenfold.
The release sparked intense debate among fans. Longtime listeners expecting a return to the Fast Loud Death era were taken aback. Critics noted that several tracks — such as “No Longer Human” and “Blood Diamond” — draw strong influence from dark rock in the vein of HIM, and even modern pop-metal aesthetics.
The most unconventional track on the album is “Dead People Scare Me (But the Living Make Me Sick)”, a crossover experiment blending 90s-style aggressive riffs, industrial atmosphere, and vocal delivery reminiscent of classic nu-metal.
Frontman Sami Elbanna described the album as deeply emotional and personal. The title “Hell Is A State Of Mind” reflects internal struggle, mental health challenges, and the idea that a person’s greatest demons often exist within their own mind.
