“Frisson Noir” is the tenth studio album — and the sixth full-length rock/metal release — by Finnish symphonic metal icon Tarja Turunen, released on June 12, 2026, via earMUSIC.
The album’s title translates as “Black Shiver” (or “Black Tremor”). The entire concept revolves around the French word frisson, which describes the sudden shiver that runs through the body while experiencing deeply moving music. Tarja described the record as a return to her heavier roots, calling it “the heaviest and darkest album of my solo career.”
The album’s sound combines her signature operatic grandeur with uncompromising modern heaviness:
- Symphonic Metal / Symphonic Rock (epic cinematic textures performed by the Budapest Art Orchestra, majestic choirs, and Tarja’s powerful soprano vocals);
- Heavy Metal / Alternative Metal (the most direct, raw, and aggressive guitar riffs of her entire solo career);
- Gothic Metal / Dark Rock (a dark, mystical atmosphere infused with melancholic undertones);
- Avant-Garde / Progressive Metal (bold experimentation with song structures, the incorporation of the traditional Japanese shamisen, and even tango rhythms).

The album is packed with remarkable collaborations. The most anticipated for longtime fans is “Leap of Faith,” featuring former Nightwish bassist and vocalist Marko Hietala. The track marks the first time in many years that the two artists have reunited on a studio recording since their paths diverged. Other guest appearances include Finnish cello virtuosos Apocalyptica, Cradle of Filth frontman Dani Filth, and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith.
Tarja explained that the album was conceived as a deliberate response to the growing dominance of digital technology and artificial intelligence in modern art. “Frisson Noir” was recorded with an emphasis on genuine human imperfection—real breaths, spontaneous emotions, and the unpredictable spark of live performance—while deliberately avoiding excessive digital editing and correction.
The record is filled with bold ethnic and stylistic experiments. The composition “Tango” (featuring Apocalyptica) masterfully blends the passion of traditional tango with crushing cellos and dark theatricality. Meanwhile, “The Trace Outlives” features the authentic sound of the traditional three-string Japanese shamisen, performed by guest musician Sayo Komada.
The lyrics of “The Trace Outlives” are inspired by the real and haunting Japanese phenomenon of Johatsu (“the evaporated people”)—individuals who deliberately disappear from their former lives due to debt, shame, or heartbreak, erasing their identities entirely in order to begin anew under different names.
The album’s closing track, “Against the Odds,” featuring Chad Smith, has a particularly meaningful history. Its instrumental foundation was originally composed during the sessions for “The Shadow Self” (2016). Tarja spent years waiting for the right moment to complete the song, ultimately finishing it for this release. The track is autobiographical, reflecting on her childhood in the small Finnish town of Kitee and her journey to international success—achieved, as the title suggests, against all odds.
